THE BATTLE OF EL ALAMEIN The Battle of El Alamein started at 20 minutes to 10 on the night of October 23, 1942 (65 years ago this month). 882 Field and medium artillery pieces, ranged along a 38 mile front from the oasis of Himeimat to the Mediterranean Sea, simultaneously opened fire in a cataclysmic, seemingly endless burst of noise and light such as the world has rarely seen before or since. El Alamein was a great deal more than simply a famous battle. It was decisive to the course of the entire Second World War. It has been said that before El Alamein, the Allies never won a battle, but that after it, they never lost one. This is not quite true, but that day in October of 1942 marked the beginning of the Axis forces' long painful retreat from the outposts of the huge empire they had conquered since 1939. |
