Steam Loco Safari Tours Photos and Report
Atlantis - 18th June 2002
Peak hour traffic is not usually an issue for rail tours, but in
this case the tour bus had to contend with this en route to the
day's starting point - Cape Town Harbour. On arrival, 16D 860 was
without train but after a bit of organising, the train of 8 XP type
tankers arrived. The suburban coaches were still on the way so 860
did a few runpasts with a beautiful backdrop of Table Mountain and
Lion's Head. Once the coaches arrived we set off up the container
line, and had runpasts at various locations such as Bull Nose yard
and a bit further on near Paarden Eiland. Then under Ysterplaat
Airport via the long tunnel and around Ratanga Junction. We noted
the double headed Garratts on a livestock train at Century City (or
the two dumped NGG16's and a few wagons!) as we passed over the N1.
A further runpast at Montague Gardens then another at the Caltex tank farm near Milnerton. The weather was still a little bit gloomy, but having steam up the Atlantis line was great, especially with the tank train at the oil refinery. Due to late running, most of the passengers were offloaded short of Atlantis after a final (and sunny!) runpast, the bus then taking them over Sir Lowry's Pass to Elgin. |
