On Tuesday, 31st August 2004,
South African Airways [SAA] Flight 262 made its first non-stop
flight from Cape Town to Frankfurt. At 17H15, after a ribbon cutting
ceremony and festivities, the Airbus 340-200 rose majestically
from the runway at Cape Town International and took to the skies
to touchdown with the sunrise in Frankfurt the following morning. On Wednesday, 1st September 2004, SAA Flight SA 263 made the inaugural non-stop return flight to Cape Town. A sending off ceremony at Frankfurt International included the best of South African wine, a gourmet's delight of South Africa's tastiest treats - including salmon in delicious variations - and a touch of traditional Cape entertainment. Even the Cape Town sun was in attendance as the Airbus left Frankfurt, and it decided to remain there a bit longer, on Craig's arrival in Cape Town it hurriedly caught up to peer over the horizon and dry up the light drizzle that glistened on the tarmac.
