Manufactured by Douglas Aircraft Corporation, Oklahoma City, USA in 1943. Serial No: 12478. Original RAF No: KG - 443, delivered to South Africa on the 26th February 1944 and re-numbered 6832 K - OD. Served with 28, 25, 44 and 35 Squadrons. On 28th-29th December 1952, while with 28 Squadron, flew Dr J L B Smith from Durban to Pamanzi in the Comoros Islands and back to recover the rare Coelacanth fish. Originally a C - 47 A Mk III it was modified to Mk IV standards in 1986. Handed over to the SAAF Museum in 1992. Currently undergoing restoration at the SAAF Museum, Ysterplaat AFB, Cape Town as per photos below. |
