Historic Transport Society - Apple Express - S A Digest - April 28th, 1972

Steam locomotives are still being used to convey goods between Port Elizabeth and Avontuur in the Eastern Cape Province - a distance of 285km.  The Apple Express, as it is generally known, runs on a narrow 610cm track which was built at the beginning of the century.  In October, 1970, a special trip on the train was organised by the Historic Transport Association to commemorate the 60th birthday of SA Railways. The locomotive is a Type NG 15 and the coaches were commissioned in 1910.
